Thank you Karlena and Mary Ramsay-Drow for speaking out and shame on those members who are so quick to criticize this directive until all of the facts and details are provided. I too, am tired of hearing people complain - they complain about the cost of EFAM, they complain about the location of EFAM, they complain their employers won't pay for them to attend functions or won't pay their membership dues. It's time you people grew up and joined the real world and quit your whining. You need to realize that people aren't just standing around waiting to dole out money to you to pay your registration to EFAM or to pay your membership dues. Did you join IAAP for your company? I don't think so. You joined for yourself so it's up to you to pay your dues. If you don't feel you are being served by the association in a satisfactory way, or you don't feel you are getting anything out of your membership, then, as much as I don't want IAAP to lose members, maybe it's time for you to rethink whether you want to continue to be a member. Besides, members who do nothing but whine and complain about things constantly do nothing but bring the association down. We want the association to move forward.
We are a PROFESSIONAL organization, or at least we are supposed to be. All of this complaining isn't professional. All it says to me is that you are all spoiled and think you are entitled to whatever, whenever.
As I've mentioned NUMEROUS times in replies to posts of complainers, until you've actually served in a leadership position where you have BEEN ELECTED BY YOUR MEMBERS or been in on the planning of these events, you don't know what time and effort is involved. All IAAP members - international board, district directors, division officers, chapter officers and chapter members and MALs are here on a VOLUNTEER basis. Those in leadership positions are most likely in those positions because they have a passion for IAAP and they want to see the association thrive and survive. Board members, at any level, are elected by YOU, the members to make decisions on your behalf.
I know that I, and the members of the division board have spent numerous hours away from families holding board meetings, going on site visits, etc., in order to bring the best educational programs and networking opportunities to our members. We care about our members and we want to encourage their professional growth and development so we do a lot of thinking and put a great deal of effort into making the decisions that we think will best meet our members needs. They elected us to make those decisions so we are accountable to them. We're not getting paid; we're giving time that could be spent elsewhere. We don't need to hear constant complaining. I will say, that I am proud that we don't have whiners and complainers in my division. Michigan Division is AWESOME!
Likewise, WE ALL elected the international board of directors. Yes, they are accountable to us, but by electing them, we gave them authority to act on our behalf. Let's let them do what they were elected to do and quit shooting down every move they make. They are professionals and do have something between their ears besides empty space. I'd venture to say that the members of the international board have more sense and professional savvy than most of our employers. So let's cut them some slack and let them do their jobs.

I found this post disturbing and as the elected volunteer president of the IAAP, I felt compelled to speak on behalf of not only myself, but also the 11 other volunteers serving on the board of directors and the exceptional staff at headquarters. Allow me to address each paragraph of the post to ensure that I provide clarity on the actions taken by the board within the vested authority empowered to them as the elected volunteer leaders of the association. First, NO ONE is trying to pull a fast anything. Your reference to the deletion of the R&E Foundation is inaccurate and very misleading. The R&E Foundation governance and Bylaws did not require any reporting to or approvals from any constituency - other than the Board of Trustees of the R&E Foundation. It was that Board who acted in recommending the dissolution of the organization and the disbursement of their assets to the RTF. As a courtesy, the R&E Foundation board met with the IAAP board to share their recommendation and requested their support to combine the two foundations into one to create a much stronger and efficient single foundation. The Bylaws amendments that were placed before the delegates at the 2012 Business Meeting and were rousingly approved resulted in the re-branding of RTF into - The Foundation of IAAP. Significant efforts were made by both the IAAP board and the board of trustees of the RTF to ensure plentiful communication and supporting rationales were provided to the delegates in advance of the Business Meeting. The trustees did not expect any sanctions for their actions, but they did request that the delegates do their homework, ask the appropriate questions and vote as an informed delegate to form one foundation. You are correct that this is not the first time for changing the IAAP fiscal year; however, again the assertion that a change in the fiscal year of the IAAP will require changes in chapter and division Bylaws is entirely inaccurate. The fiscal year of the IAAP has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the "governance year" of the association. It never has. For the record, while you are accurate that many chapters and divisions hold their respective annual meetings in the months of May and June, and at that time do hold elections, there is no single common date throughout the IAAP organization for which elected leaders of these constituencies assume their respective offices. Perhaps we could have initially stated differently the Board's recommendation to change the fiscal year and the request that the Bylaws and Standing Rules Committee draft the necessary Bylaws amendment, immediately after seeing the postings of concern we did repost the Action > Direction with more clarity.
I personally object to your statement of being "bullied." This is my seventh year of serving as a volunteer leader. At no single occurrence have I, or any other volunteer leader I have been privileged to serve with on the board, viewed the authority granted to us by the membership as an opportunity to be "bullies". May I assure you and all members that when the proposed amendment is distributed by April 15, 2013, we will provide a clear and concise supporting rationale. The staff and the Board's hired independent auditors made a sound business case for the recommendation to change the fiscal year. As elected volunteers it is our responsibility to review, question and debate the merits of staff recommendations. Again, their recommendation was purely for improved overall fiscal operations impacting the business of the organization - nothing more....nothing less. The board of directors has strived the past five years to work on the transparency of the work and actions that we do. I believe that we are achieving the goal. No governance is going to please everyone, but our goal is the same as yours - to do the absolute best we can to provide our members and the delegates who represent them the opportunity to make an informed voting decision during the 2013 Business Meeting. ------------------------------------------- Karlena Rannals, CAP-OM International President - 2012/13

I am appalled that again this year, the BoD is trying to pull a fast one on the membership by stating they are changing the fiscal year of the association. They did this last year when they effectively deleted the R&E Foundation and the RTF and then expected us to sanction their actions at EFAM.
I do understand one of the reasons for wanting to change the fiscal year to starting on October 1. It will provide a better transition for the newly elected board members to move into a new fiscal year. As it stands now, we are almost into the second month of the current fiscal year before the officers can start their new responsibilities. This is not the first time changing the fiscal year has been discussed.
However, to state in the Action/Direction the BoD has "approved the change" was not the proper way to present this to the membership. Instead, the item should have been worded, "Approved to request the IBSR to submit a bylaw amendment to change . . ."
After twenty-five years of membership, I am tired of being bullied into doing what 11 people decide without being given the recognition that I have a brain and can see the benefit to the board for this change; however, I do not see the benefit for the general membership, the chapters or the divisions in the association. Does the good of the 11 members of the board outweigh the good of the over 24,000 members?
My question is has the board thought about what this will do the chapters and divisions? As I see it, each chapter and division will have to change their bylaws to conform with this change. Does that mean chapters will be electing their officers in July or August? What about the divisions? Most of them hold their annual meeting in May or June and elect officers then. Do the annual meetings now have to be moved to July or August and have the elections done then? How about the change in the CoE and DoE and MoE programs? How is that going to be handled, especially in 2013 when we will have a 15 month fiscal year?
There are too many questions and not enough answers to this proposed change.

This message has been cross posted to the following eGroups: Let's Talk and EFAM General Discussion . ------------------------------------------- How can the International BoD simply elect to, per the Action-Direction from the Fall BoD meeting, " . . . change the IAAP fiscal year end from June 30 to September 30 starting in 2013; transitioning with a 15 month fiscal year of 7/1/13-9/30/14." without amending the Bylaws, specifically Article VII, International Dues and Fees, Section 7, Fiscal Year, which states: "The IAAP fiscal year shall be July through June 30." Does this not take an amendment to the Bylaws with a vote by the IAAP membership? Am I wrong? Do we no longer, as a membership, have a voice?
